Hydrotherapy rehabilitation is aquatic exercise that involves performing physical exercises and movements in water. The buoyancy and resistance of water provide a low-impact environment for strengthening muscles, improving flexibility, and enhancing cardiovascular fitness. Hydrotherapy can be particularly beneficial for individuals with joint pain, arthritis, or mobility issues with:

  1. Reduced Weight-Bearing: Immersion in water reduces the effects of gravity, which can be particularly helpful for individuals with weight-bearing restrictions or those recovering from orthopedic injuries. This reduction in weight-bearing can alleviate pressure on joints, allowing for increased range of motion and decreased pain during exercises.
  2. Buoyancy: Water provides buoyant force, which supports the body and reduces the impact on joints. This makes it easier to perform movements and exercises that might be difficult or painful on land. Buoyancy also allows for greater freedom of movement and increased flexibility.
  3. Resistance: The resistance of water provides a natural form of resistance for muscle strengthening and cardiovascular conditioning. Resistance training in water can be particularly effective for building strength and endurance without putting excessive stress on the joints.
  4. Improved Circulation: Hydrotherapy can promote circulation by encouraging blood flow to the muscles and joints. This can help in reducing inflammation, promoting healing, and flushing out toxins from the body.
  5. Pain Relief: The warmth of the water used in hydrotherapy can help to relax muscles and alleviate pain. Additionally, the sensory stimulation provided by water can help to distract from pain sensations, making exercises more tolerable.
  6. Balance and Coordination: Hydrotherapy can improve balance and coordination through exercises performed in water. The resistance and buoyancy of water challenge the body’s stability, helping to strengthen core muscles and improve proprioception.
  7. Psychological Benefits: Engaging in hydrotherapy can have positive psychological effects, such as reducing stress, anxiety, and depression. The soothing properties of water and the sense of weightlessness can promote relaxation and a sense of well-being.

Our Moreton All Body Care hydrotherapy classes are run at the Burpengary Regional Aquatic Leisure Centre. These weekly classes are undertaken in a small group, run by our Exercise Physiologists.
