Strength and Balance

What is Strength and Balance?

The strength and balance class is a circuit based class run by our Accredited Exercise Physiologists consisting of evidence based exercises such as:

  • A variety of static and dynamic balance exercises
  • General strengthening exercises that aim to use muscle groups across the whole body (upper body, lower body and core strengthening), utilising body weight, machines, free weights and resistance bands
  • Postural strengthening exercises
  • Aerobic fitness exercises such as treadmill walking, stationary bike and aerobic steps
  • Functional exercises that can be transferred into real life scenarios and improve ability to perform activities of daily living
  • A dedicated group stretching routine to improve/maintain flexibility and joint range of motion required to perform activities of daily living

Strength and Balance classes may be suitable for you if you:

  • Are looking to increase global muscular strength and mobility to maintain independence and make performing activities of daily living easier
  • Wish to improve balance and coordination
  • Lack confidence in your balance and wish to reduce risk and incidence of falls
  • Have osteoporosis or osteopenia
  • Have Type 1 or Type 2 diabetes (you may be eligible for a care plan from your GP for Medicare subsidised sessions)
  • Have rheumatoid or osteoarthritis
  • Wish to enhance your physical well-being
  • Are wanting to get out and meet some new people whilst exercising in a supportive environment
  • Wish to continue on from your care plan, maintaining your movement and physical activity with access to classes run by university qualified professionals

We don’t recommend strength and balance classes for people who:

  • Have had a recent heart attack
  • Have unstable heart conditions
  • Have severe lack of confidence in balance or cannot mobilise independently with or without mobility aids
  • Uncontrolled conditions such as epilepsy and diabetes
  • Had a recent neurological event

We also offer one on one exercise physiology and physiotherapy sessions if this is preferred and offer a range of other classes such as neurological and cardiac rehabilitation, should these be more suitable (please see additional tabs listed under exercise physiology for more information on services).
