Back pain is a very common problem, and when poorly managed it can be seriously debilitating. It can restrict movement ranges, and impact one’s capability to work and perform everyday tasks.
Unfortunately, most Australians will experience back pain at some point in their lives (70-90%). It can be caused from a wide range of things; from traumatic injuries, overuse, to simply a sedentary lifestyle. While traumatic/sinister injuries (disc problems, fractures etc.) do occur, the most common type of back dysfunction is called “nonspecific lower back pain”, meaning that there is no structural (injury related) cause fitting your symptoms. This type of pain is usually related to a movement dysfunction (or lack of movement), and requires an exercise focussed rehabilitation program.
Treatment techniques which may be utilised throughout your treatment may include:
- Soft tissue massage
- Joint mobilisation or manipulation
- A customized exercise program (e.g. core strengthening, spinal mobility exercises)
- Taping techniques
- Use of electrotherapy modalities
- Heat or ice packs
The goal while treating any back pain is to optimize movement patterns, decrease discomfort or pain, and help empower you the client to take control over your pain through exercise and self-management strategies.
Regardless of your type of back pain or the treatment required, our physiotherapists at Moreton All Body Care will be able to thoroughly assess the cause of your pain, and formulate a treatment program tailored to your specific needs.
